In the gritty streets of 1980s East Berlin, Michael, known as Stummel, stands as an unyielding punk, refusing to conform to society's expectations. His unconventional choices lead to frequent separations from his single mother, who struggles to comprehend his rebellious spirit. Repeatedly, he is sent off to various youth homes, challenging the norms that confine him. A twist of fate brings forth fatherhood at a tender age, as Michael becomes a teenage dad. Fueled by his longing for personal freedom, he takes a bold step and applies to leave the country, finding refuge in the vibrant streets of West Berlin. This captivating long-term documentary was made aspiring film students from HFF Konrad Wolf Potsdam. Their lens starts capturing Michael's journey in November 1989, as the Berlin Wall crumbles, transforming the social and political landscape. Following the fall of the Wall, the filmmakers rejoin Michael's story, documenting the everyday lives of both mother and son, this time in the western part of Germany. Bernd Sahlung, the insightful director, reflects on the evolution of their film: "What began as a glimpse into Stummel's life gradually unfolded into a profound double portrait. Stummel's mother, Brunhilde, staunchly believed that personal freedom could only be found within the confines of societal conventions, such as a regular job. Conversely, Stummel viewed social norms as tools of oppression. In a poignant conversation, he shared his perspective with us: 'What troubles could possibly befall me? Money? It holds no significance. A job? I am not bound by it... I refuse to bear the weight of responsibilities, so I can't fathom substantial problems.'"
